According to the EPA, a long term test is the best way to determine your exposure to radon during different seasons and living conditions in your home, providing a better estimate of your actual risk. The alpha track radon test kit remains in your home for a period of no less than thirty (30) days and not to exceed one year, allowing you to measure the radon level under normal living conditions. An alpha track detector takes into account all the changes in weather that occur during the radon gas test period, as well as the changes in the way you occupy/use your house under differing weather conditions. Weather conditions and ventilation habits can influence the radon level in your house, and with this type of radon gas test you measure the way you actually live, opening and closing doors and windows any time you want and using mechanical ventilation as you normally do.

An alpha track detector operates on a very different principle than the charcoal-based short term radon test kit and provides a much better indication of your home's long term average radon level. Inside the unit is a piece of film that records the impacts (tracks) of alpha particles produced by the decay of radon and its decay by-product, polonium. At the end of the radon gas test period, the radon testing kit is sent in the pre-paid mailer to the laboratory, who counts the alpha tracks on the film, computes the radon concentration, and reports the analysis.

5 stars helpful customer service
I had to call to make sure I was placing it in the right place as we have a daylight basement (one side is buried underground and the other side is above with a door). The person was very patient and helpful in helping me figure out where to place it. Also about how long to let the test run. Thank you!

5 stars Just started test period, too early to make any assessment
I plan on running the test for 90 days and we'll see how it does after getting the results. The kit was easy to assemble, so far so good.

4 stars Good product; seems to be working (not yet finished)
Good product; good value. Only comment - instructions refer to a hook that goes on the bottom of the unit. The hook approach was changed to a sticker approach, but the instructions did not change. Confusing - I kept looking for the hook. Maybe refer to both techniques in the instructions.

4 stars Useful long term Radon Testing
The kit arrived quickly in the mail. There are detailed instructions with it. Yesterday I placed it in a basement room. My only problem was that I had to add some duct tape to get the little tab to stick to the back of the case. Then I could hang the device by a string to some open furniture. I plan to leave it there for 2 or 3 months and then return it in the easy to use box with the mailing label.

Why do I need to test for radon?

Radon comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water, entering the air you breathe. Radon is colorless and odorless. It can infiltrate any type of building - homes, offices, and schools - and build up to high levels. But you and your family will most likely receive your greatest exposure where you spend most of your time... your home.

It is estimated that radon causes many thousands of deaths each year because breathing air that contains radon can cause lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, your risk of contracting lung cancer is especially high.
