The Safety Siren Pro Series 3 Electronic Radon Detector from Family Safety Products was the first radon gas detector on the market designed for use by the homeowner. This low cost, consumer oriented digital radon detector allows the homeowner to monitor the radon level in their home with an easy-to-read digital display. The manufacturer states that the device has been tested by EPA approved laboratories and has been proven to accurately measure radon.

The Pro 3 digital radon monitor is designed to plug into a standard 110-volt household outlet using the attached 10 foot power cord. The detector may be placed face-up on a tabletop, counter top, or any flat surface where the ventilation slots will not be blocked. The radon detector provides a continuous reading of the radon level in your home.

Please note that this detector should not be used as a substitute for performing a conventional radon test in your home, or for professional applications. The device is suitable for monitoring home radon levels only after an initial assessment has been performed using conventional test kits or by a radon professional. Further, periodic testing using conventional test kits should be done in conjunction with the detector to ensure it is working properly. Radon is odorless and colorless and there is no way to ensure the device is working properly without such cross checks. Please see our discounted test kit offer (above the "Add to Cart" button) to include a discounted conventional test kit with your order.

Optional Charcoal Short Term Radon Test Kit at a Discounted Price

By taking advantage of our discounted short term test kit offer (above the "Add To Cart" button), you'll receive the detector and a conventional charcoal radon test kit for a great price. As explained above, the use of a conventional kit is recommended for initial radon assessments and on a periodic basis thereafter.

The discounted short term radon test kit remains in your home for three to seven days, providing an independent initial accurate reading of the radon level of your home. At the end of the radon gas test period, the test kit is sealed and sent to the laboratory in the pre-paid mailer for analysis.

The EPA Recommends the Following Testing Steps:

The amount of radon in the air is measured in "picoCuries per liter of air," or "pCi/L." Sometimes test results are expressed in Working Levels (WL) rather than picoCuries per liter (pCi/L) (4 pCi/L equals to 0.016 WL).

Using a short term charcoal radon test kit, if your result is 4 pCi/L or higher (0.02 Working Levels [WL] or higher) take a follow-up test (Step 2) to be sure.

Follow-up with either a long term test or a second short term test:

  • For a better understanding of your year-round average radon level, use a long term alpha track radon test kit.
  • If you need results quickly, use a second short term charcoal radon test kit.

The higher the result of your initial short term radon test kit, the more certain you can be that you should take another short term test rather than a long term follow-up test.

If your first short term test result is several times the action level - for example, about 10 pCi/L or higher - you should take a second short term test immediately.

If you followed up with a long term alpha track test kit: Fix your home if your long term test result is 4 pCi/L or more (0.02 Working Levels [WL] or higher).

If you followed up with a second short term radon test kit: The higher your short term results, the more certain you can be that you should fix your home. Consider fixing your home if the average of your first and second test is 4 pCi/L or higher (0.02 Working Levels [WL] or higher).

General EPA Recommendations Regarding Short Term Tests

  • Carefully follow the instructions that come with radon test kits.
  • Close your windows and outside doors and keep them closed as much as possible during the test.
  • Be sure to close your windows and outside doors at least 12 hours before beginning the test.
  • You should not conduct short term tests lasting just 4 or so days during unusually severe storms or periods of unusually high winds.
  • The test kit should be placed in the lowest lived-in level of the home (for example, the basement if it is frequently used, otherwise the first floor).
  • It should be put in a room that is used regularly (like a living room, playroom, den or bedroom) but not your kitchen or bathroom.
  • Place the kit at least 20 inches above the floor in a location where it won't be disturbed - away from drafts, high heat, high humidity, and exterior walls.
  • Do not disturb the test device at any time during the test.
  • Maintain closed-house conditions during the entire time of a short term test, especially for tests shorter than one week in length.
  • Operate the home's heating and cooling systems normally during the test. For tests lasting less than one week, operate only air-conditioning units which re-circulate interior air.
  • If a radon-reduction system is in place, make sure the system is working.
  • Once you are finished, follow the directions for sending the test back to the laboratory.
  • If an elevated level is found, fix the home. Contact a qualified radon-reduction contractor about lowering the radon level. EPA recommends that you fix the home when the radon level is 4 pCi/L or more.

The state provided us a test kit which tested at 3 times the acceptable. We then had a local company test and do their medication. They recommended your unit which enables us to know our levels and provide safety and security.

5 stars Great product, very accurate, easy to use. Super pleased.
Made us feel safer as we spent a week in our new home. Property inspector tested our new home prior to purchase and came up with a reading of over 50 (above 4 is unsafe). Having mitigation done and will keep our radon detector going to assure safe levels are achieved and maintained.

I am very happy with my new pro detector. It is quite accurate so it reduces my worries about high levels of radon. I had my first detector for almost 10 years until I dropped it.

5 stars Essential Product
I believe this is a must-have item in a home in which a radon mitigation system is installed. The detector provides a comfort level in identifying that the mitigation system is fully effective. It was easy to set up and the instructions and other pertinent information easy to understand. Of note this is the same unit we installed in a previous home and were completely satisfied with its function and reliability.

Why do I need to test for radon?

Radon comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water, entering the air you breathe. Radon is colorless and odorless. It can infiltrate any type of building - homes, offices, and schools - and build up to high levels. But you and your family will most likely receive your greatest exposure where you spend most of your time... your home.

It is estimated that radon causes many thousands of deaths each year because breathing air that contains radon can cause lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, your risk of contracting lung cancer is especially high.
